Feature: Correct Usage Method First, gently press the hardness test file against the workpiece being tested, then lightly file forward for a stroke of approximately 5 mm. If the file feels as though it is slipping, this indicates that the hardness of the workpiece exceeds that of the test file. Conversely, if you feel a distinct filing sensation, this indicates that the hardness of the workpiece is lower than that of the test file. Method for Maximizing the Durability of Hardness Test Files Begin by using the file with the highest hardness rating—for instance, HRC65 (Black). If this file is able to cut into the material, switch to the next lower rating, HRC60 (Blue). If that file also cuts into the material, switch again to HRC50 (Lake Green). If the file then slips without cutting, this indicates that the hardness of the workpiece lies within the range of HRC50–55.
